Organic Strawberries: The Fertrell Approach

By Ben Seldomridge

Cultivating organically grown strawberries requires a comprehensive approach to soil fertility and plant health. The Fertrell Company's Berry Care Program offers a structured regimen using natural and organic products to enhance strawberry production.

Seasonal Fertilization Schedule

The program emphasizes timely applications of specific fertilizers to meet the nutritional needs of strawberry plants throughout the growing season.

Early Spring (March-April): Apply Fertrell Berry Mix 4-2-4 at a rate of 4–5 pounds per 100 row feet. This balanced fertilizer provides essential nutrients to support initial plant growth.

Throughout Growing Season: Utilize Fertrell Liquid #3 (2-3-1) as a foliar feed, mixing 1–2 ounces per gallon of water. Apply every 14–21 days to promote continuous growth and development.  If deficient in potassium, apply .25#/1000 sq ft of Sulfate of Potash once every two weeks.

Post-Harvest (July-September): After the final harvest, administer Berry Mix 4-2-4 again, increasing the rate to 8–10 pounds per 100 row feet. This replenishes soil nutrients and prepares plants for the next season.

Soil Amendments and Mulching

Incorporating soil amendments and proper mulching techniques are vital components of the program.  Compost is a great option if phosphorus and organic matter is low.

Aragonite Application: In early spring, apply 8 pounds of aragonite per 100 row feet to supply calcium and improve soil structure.

Mulching Practices: After post-harvest fertilization, mulch the plants to conserve moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weed growth. This practice also enhances nutrient availability to the roots.

Pest and Disease Management

Maintaining plant health includes proactive pest and disease control measures.

Early Spring: Apply Pure Spray Green at a concentration of 2.5–3.75 ounces per gallon of water when the first leaves emerge after the last hard frost. This helps prevent early-season pests and diseases.

Early Summer: Use Regalia at least once to manage potential disease outbreaks. For insect issues, consider treatments with Pure Spray Green or Pyganic, following the manufacturer's directions.

By adhering to The Fertrell Company's Berry Care Program, organic strawberry growers can optimize plant health and fruit yield through natural and sustainable practices.
