Cattle Grazing

Grazing season is here for many of you. Or coming soon for the rest. Grazing season is always exciting for both the livestock and you. Spring grass is rich in protein and potassium. These can be a deadly combination for most grazing livestock.

Spring and fall grasses when the nights are cold and the days are warm is a combination that may lead to bloat, grass tetany and other metabolic problems. Most of these health concerns can be managed by adding a little extra calcium and magnesium to the livestock’s diet. I would recommend 2 ounces of both high-quality calcium like aragonite and magnesium in the form of magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt). Whether you force feed or free choice, these two minerals will reduce the effects of early spring lush pasture that are full of protein and potassium.

Happy Spring! Happy Grazing!
